Many think that cleaning of inverter split AC must be performed by professionals. Actually, if you know the basic cleaning techniques and read the manual included on your air con purchase, you may find this activity something you can do by yourself.
To help you further, below is the basic cleaning guidelines to follow when cleaning split air conditioning units.
Guidelines in cleaning split air conditioning
For the parts of the air con located inside the house, read the cleaning guidelines below:
- Wrap the unit with a new cleaning bag
To avoid dust and dirt reaching the floor, cover the entire unit with a cleaning bag. There are cleaning bags available online, and buying those with cinch, to tighten and loosen the bag when needed, is highly recommended.
If there is no cleaning bag available, you can use trash bags instead.
- Remove air filters
Once the air con is covered, remove the filters out. They are most of the time located in front of the AC.
- Rinse air filters with water
In a basin of water, clean the filter and make sure that all dust and dirt are removed. Let it dry once done.
Dust off the cooling fins: Using a blower, dust off the air con’s cooling fins.
Apply no rinse evaporator spray on the AC’s coils: Buy no rinse evaporator spray online or hardware. Apply it on the coils and let it dry.
Apply antifungal cleaners to coils: Antifungal cleaner is applied to prevent molds from affecting your unit.
Put the air filters back: Once all is complete, put the filters back to its original position.
Plug the air con again and check if it is working.
Outdoor split air conditioning cleaning:
For the parts of the air con located outdoors, follow the cleaning instructions below:
- Flush out the air con’s drain
It is highly important that the drain of the air con is flushed out often. Disconnect the pipe or hose connecting the indoor and outdoor of the unit. Using pressurized water, flush out all the dust and dirt. Flushing of dust can minimize blockage of dust in the hose or pipe.
- Vacuum the air con’s condenser fins
Using a vacuum with brush connected to it, remove all the dust in the fins. Glide it downwards until all dusts are removed.
- If needed: Straighten the condenser metal fins
If you see some fins warped or misaligned, get a long knife and straighten them.
- Remove the fan
Remove the fan of the unit using a screw. To make sure that the fan is removed properly, follow the guidelines set by the manufacturer. There are different ways to remove the fan hence best to refer to the manual when doing so. Clean the fan with clean water and let it dry.
- Put the fan back
Make sure that the fan is back to its original position and place.
